I am running for Richfield City Council because I want to keep Richfield’s progress going.

We’re headed in a great direction, and I want to help steward our city over the next four years.

Brett Stursa, candidate for Ward 1

I’ve been leading in Richfield for years.

My experience on both the Richfield Human Rights Commission and the Richfield Planning Commission deepened my understanding of the city, so that I can hit the ground running on day one.

I want to ensure that we continue being excellent stewards of our land and resources so that the city remains an affordable, inclusive and vibrant place to live.

My Richfield Story

My mom grew up in Richfield, and I remember visiting my grandma on Russell Avenue as a kid — in awe of the tall evergreens in her front yard. (They are still there!)

I grew up in Burnsville, and then headed to New York University, where I got my bachelor’s degree. After working as a community newspaper reporter and editor for 10 years, I went back to school to get my master’s degree in Library and Information Science from St. Catherine’s University.

When it came time to find a home, Richfield couldn’t be beat. I first rented in Richfield, and become a homeowner here in 2016. I’ve been involved in the community my whole time here:

  • I served on the Richfield Human Rights Commission, first as a commissioner and then as chair. I’m proud of the work we did to strengthen inclusivity in our community, including a celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day.

  • I’ve served as a Richfield election judge, helping voters at their polling place.

  • I’m now in my second term as a Richfield Planning Commissioner, where one of my favorite things is listening to neighbors share their preferences and concerns. Sometimes we disagree, but I think it’s important that we all have a voice.

When I’m not volunteering in Richfield, I’m working in my professional life as an editor and writer at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, where I get to tell the inspiring stories of nurse researchers, educators and students.

My favorite places in our Urban Hometown are Wood Lake Nature Center, the Richfield City Pool — and my own backyard.
